As a highly skilled leader, the Head of Finance will play a critical role in our organization, providing leadership, direction, and management to the finance and accounting team. The Head of Finance serves as a strategic advisor, driving the company’s financial strength and profitable growth through their financial, strategic, and operational insights. As a catalyst for transformation, the Head of Finance helps shape and achieve our organization’s growth objectives.

The key functions and responsibilities of this position are:

• Acting as a strategic business partner to the CEO and Executive Team, participating in the development and implementation of the company’s strategic plan to advance growth objectives.
• Enhancing and safeguarding the company’s reputation through prudent capital and financial management, modeling, compliance with regulatory requirements, and fostering a high-performing culture.
• Establishing and ensuring compliance with the company’s policies, procedures, and controls, including accounting, tax, client money, and treasury.
• Overseeing financial forecasting and budget processes, including the building of management reports, and engaging appropriate resources to ensure adequate design and maintenance of such.
• Analyzing monthly financial results, ensuring information is accurate and timely, including balance sheets, cash flows, P&L, and key performance measures.
• Developing a framework for analyzing and understanding business trends.
• Designing and implementing changes to the Finance organizational design, processes, and systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness while maintaining control standards.
• Ensuring compliance with Canadian accounting standards and fulfilling all financial reporting and compliance obligations.
• Overseeing the filing and payment of all tax obligations.
• Advising on long-term business, financial planning, and tax strategy, including ways to minimize the company’s tax burden.
• Maintaining strong relationships with the company’s bank(s) and external auditors.
• Managing the company’s financial risk exposure and identifying potential future risk.
• Direct responsibility for financial controls and reporting systems, including internal audit to ensure the proper use and adherence to risk mitigation procedures. .
• Developing value-creating funding plans, capital structure, and dividend policy recommendations.
• Participating on the company’s Audit, Finance & Risk Committee, providing and presenting financial and capital results, projections, audit results, and discussing financial and regulatory issues.

The ideal candidate meets the following criteria:

• Chartered Professional Accountant with a minimum of 10+ years of experience.
• Proven experience as a Head of Finance or similar role in the insurance industry is preferred.
• Sound understanding of corporate governance, accounting and tax regulations, and the treasury function.

• Proven track record of providing financial leadership and aligning business and finance strategy to deliver profitable growth.
• Solid business judgment and superior analytical abilities.
• Ability to independently challenge the ideas of the executive team and Board of Directors while maintaining their respect and confidence.
• Excellent communication skills, able to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate trustworthiness, reliability, and hard work.
• Experience using Applied Epic is considered an asset.
• Proficient in English business communications and strong presentation skills.
• Strong ethics and values.
• Excellent people management skills, with a track record of building high-performing, collaborative, results-oriented teams.
